Escape The Addiction
My father has changed. One of the most difficult changes I’ve faced was having to watch my father abuse alcohol. I remember as if it was yesterday. My dad would wake up in the morning, go to work, come home and immediately start drinking; that is if he wasn’t drunk already. This happened on a daily basis, to the point that I realized his life would be at risk. I just assumed he was just like that. I thought that was normal. As I matured, I realized something was wrong and spoke to him about it.
As my knowledge grew , I began to understand that effects of alcohol and why he had to have it. When a person drinks alcohol, It’s absorbed into the bloodstream and affects every part of the body. In the long term, this can put a person’s health at serious risk. Alcohol consumption causes physical and emotional changes that can do great harm to the body. The long-term effects of alcohol abuse are many, putting a person’s health in serious jeopardy and endangering one’s life. We had some good conversations at times. It is funny how a person can open up when he is drunk. My dad talked about his childhood, and even how he and my mom met. That was probably the best story of all.
Suddenly, It got deep. That’s when I had asked him the question, “ Why do you drink that?”. Cutting him off of his story telling, my father looking at me and just slowly putting his beer down. I had never forgotten what he told me. He said “Son … please achieve in school, don't you go into my situation. Just look at me”. I was very hurt inside. I did promise him I would, If he himself promised me he would stop drinking.
From this experience, from my father's addiction, he has changed enormously. With the talk we had about his addiction, my father has always kept his promise and so have I. He has gone six years without drinking.
From this I have been inspired to help others who go through similar problems and any issues in general. I have been more open with others and especially my father. Anyone with the same situation like my fathers should always seek help. I have seen many whose lives are ruined. They take the wrong path when making decisions like that and it really hurts not just themselves, but family too.
